NMMC Champions Gender Agenda by Joining International Women in Mining
Navoi Mining and Metallurgical Company (NMMC) has become the first company from Uzbekistan to join International Women in Mining (IWiM) as a partner. This partnership marks a significant step forward in NMMC's commitment to gender equality and women's empowerment.
The gender agenda has been playing a pivotal role in NMMC's operations for many years. As the largest employer in the country, NMMC boasts a workforce with over 13% women (6261) and 13% in leadership roles, demonstrating its dedication to creating opportunities for female employees in a traditionally male-dominated industry.
Since 2020, the company has implemented the "Principles of Gender Equality and Women's Rights Promotion." NMMC has established a Women's Council, with representatives in each division responsible for promoting gender equality initiatives. Annually, a work plan for the Council is developed and approved, meetings and events are held to promote and protect women's rights, encourage educational pursuits, and address family and interpersonal relationship issues.
This strategic partnership with IWiM underscores NMMC's dedication to fostering a more inclusive and diverse mining sector. The partnership with IWiM will provide NMMC access to IWiM's extensive database of best practices, participation in industry research and surveys, and the opportunity to leverage IWiM's global network.
NMMC will promote gender equality by aligning with IWiM's mission and contribute to a broader movement toward diversity, equity, and inclusion within Uzbekistan's mining industry. This partnership will inspire other companies to prioritize gender equality, ultimately contributing to a more sustainable future for the mining sector in Uzbekistan and beyond.
