The Muruntau mine, located in the Kyzylkum desert, is recognized by the international geological community as a miracle of the 20th century in terms of gold reserves. The discovery of this deposit is directly related to the name of the famous geologist, academician Ibrokhim Khamroboev.
The Muruntau mine is recognized by geologists as the largest in terms of gold reserves, its reserves are estimated at more than 4.5 thousand tons. It is one of the largest mines in the world for the extraction of gold ores.
Today the length of the quarry is 5.5 km, the width is 3.4 km, the depth is 650 meters. During the operation of the mine, more than 2.2 billion cubic meters of rock mass were extracted.
According to the results of 2023, the volume of mining operations amounted to 110.6 million cubic meters. This figure is 62.2 million cubic meters or 78% more than the volume of mining operations completed in 2018.
“Today, modern technique and technologies are used in the main technological processes, such as drilling, blasting, mining and transportation, which are carried out step by step in mining operations. Considering that the depth of the quarry has reached 650 meters, you can be sure that a large amount of work is being done here. Phase V of the quarry in the future will allow the depth to be increased to more than 1,000 meters and the extraction of more than 50 million tons of ore per year”, - noted the head of the Muruntau mine, Sherzod Kamolov.
According to the analytical center Kitco, in 2020 and 2021, twice in a row, the Muruntau mine was recognized as the world leader in gold mining.
In 2022, Forbes magazine noted that the world’s largest open gold mine Muruntau is located in Uzbekistan, which is also possibly the largest in the world in terms of gold reserves.
